English as a Second Language
English as a Second Language Resources
Learning English as a Second Language is a subject close to my heart. As a former Head of English in a secondary school, I saw a large influx of ESL students and went out of my way to develop my academic understanding of this area. I now know how to ensure someone develops their English quickly and confidently. There will be sections for readers, with short stories, reading strategies, comprehension resources and worksheets and throughout a key emphasis on vocabulary. It is the vocabulary that is important for any speaker or reader. However, everyone needs to communicate in written English so there will be sections which addresses how to write correctly, the issue of English grammar, and writing for beginners. I will put up free websites and resources and they will help you on your way to being a confident writer. Studying English requires a course and some tutors. I advise you not to try and study alone. I have looked at a range of courses and selected some to help you get started. I teach English so it is easy for me to see whether a course is worth it or not. Do not be defrauded out of your money by a low standard course - you should have high expectations of course materials and support. If you are after a tutor then Ravi's site, www.english-for-students.com/Find-Your-ESL-Teacher.html can put you in contact with a range of online tutors - remember what I say, feedback from a tutor is worth more than any other single intervention. See Hattie's (2003) research for more information: Hattie, 2003, Teachers Make a Difference: what is the evidence? (This link opens up an Adobe Reader .pdf document) Start simple and think outside the box with your students. Consider the use of images and get students drawing and using art to explore language. The images and lines website can be a useful starting point for this. If you just need help with translating - welcome to the world of the internet. You can use the many online services, but be careful. There are clear strategies which can improve the outcome of your translating and I shall explain those clearly. In general, most people need high quality resources such as worksheets, free online games, English grammar explained, and free websites. However, the standard will be variable. I shall put up resources created by myself and my community of English teachers and ask that other English teachers who visit this site upload their own links or resources to help others. As always, if there is a section or resources you would like to see here, just write in the comment section below.
